Paper is a fundamental component of the majority of our products, directly contributing to over 60% of our carbon footprint. Understanding the paper lifecycle and how we can drive down waste and use sustainable paper is key to achieving our environmental aims. • We always aim to go ‘beyond the audit’ with an increased focus on human rights • We have moved from 2 pillar audits to 4 pillar audits as standard to cover environmental auditing • We expect all our suppliers to apply the standards set out under the ETI base code and ensure their workers’ rights within it. See www.ethicaltrade.org/eti-base-code • All our main suppliers have to be audited by an independent third party using SMETA standards • We support and encourage new and small companies to work towards our standards • We inspect all main suppliers factories in person • We maintain supplier database with audit reports and critical action plans and follow up actions • Always carry out our own factory inspection assessments in all major suppliers • We will work openly to share ethical issues with all interested parties • We ensure our staff are aware of our ethical standards • For our retail company (Calendar Club) we will work with suppliers to encourage them to work towards the same standards we set for our own published products • Similarly, for other publishers and suppliers that supply Otter House & Carousel, we will encourage them to work towards the same standards we set for our own published products ETHICAL CONDUCT FOR OUR OWN PUBLISHED PRODUCTS Over 250 calendars and diaries without plastic packaging and growing all the time Foil and glitter removed from cards and stationery ranges New card ranges are free from plastic packaging All card reprints will now be produced free from plastic packaging Non-recyclable materials being removed from stationery ranges Plastic inserts removed from Chocolatte mug range All new jigsaw puzzles are plastic free All new card ranges and reprints printed plastic free by January 2021 Plastic-coated wire to be removed from wire-o-bound calendars and replaced with metal wire 50% of calendars to be plastic-free packaged by 2022 Product trials to take place with cellulose-based lamination Eco labels on product displays from Autumn 2020 In 2019 we used 47 tonnes of plastic to present and package our products. Shrink-wrap product wrapping accounted for 28 tonnes, and so we have been exploring ways of reducing this. In 2020 we developed a plastic-free calendar product across three formats and this grows every year. We are working with other key publishers to improve industry’s overall environmental performance. All pallet wrap, shrink-wrap and polybags we use are recyclable.
